Recently while attending the Colorado Emergency Mangers Conference we discovered we need to up our game in communications, mainly in the ability to send and receive ICS documents via WinLink. With that being said, we need to start from the beginning and train everyone in ARES on WinLink and some of the new capabilities that I noticed at the show. So, on April 9, 2022, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Windsor Fire Dept 100 7th Street Windsor, Colorado, we have a WinLink Training Course for all ARES members. This meeting will be a requirement for all ARES volunteers. If, for some reason, you cannot attend or have any questions, please get in touch with me, and I will help you with a makeup session. This will be a great tool to our toolbox, making us more valuable to the served agencies. Thank you for supporting ARES, and I’ll see you on April 9th.

Request for Winlink Local Weather Reports All,
Since Colorado ARES and AUXCOMM will have a table at this year’s Colorado Emergency Management Association’s annual Colorado Emergency Management Conference (22 to 25 Feb), and some winter weather is expected to hit us the next couple days, the Colorado ARES Section Emergency Coordinator Jon NX0H has requested that operators submit Winlink Local Weather Reports to him anytime between now thru Wednesday the 23rd to demonstrate at the conference. Therefore, I have created a walk-thru for those who are not familiar with Winlink messages or templates. You do NOT have to be a member of ARES or AUXCOMM to participate.

On Saturday March 26, 2022 ARES Region 1 District 1 will be hosting the National Weather Service for our annual SkyWarn® spotter training at the Larimer County EOC facility located in Johnstown, Colorado. The training class will begin at 0830 on 03/26/2022 and will go until mid afternoon. for further information on the location please and to Register for the training PLEASE go HERE.
This week we will kick-off COMEX 22-1, an opportunity for Amateurs to talk to Air Force and Army MARS operators.

MARS operators will use their MARS callsigns on 60 meters
There could be requests for situation reports (roads, infrastructure, weather, airport conditions) made between 1400z – 1910z – during the first 10 minutes of each hour. This request may appear on your favorite rag-chew frequency (HF/UHF/VHF); please respond if you hear a call.

As ARES members we should always be prepared to communicate with whatever tools are available and fit the need. DMR communications are becoming much more widespread, and are used almost exclusively at the state level. To help us all become familiar and comfortable with this mode, we will be using DMR for the first ARES net of each month. We will be using Talk Group 721 – Northern Colorado. The goal is to make sure our members are familiar with this mode. If you have a DMR capable radio, get it programmed and try it out. If you have any questions or problems contact us, and we can help you out. If you don’t have a radio and would like to try, we have a limited number of radios that can be loaned. For the last few weeks, ARES have been conducting weekly training on the Thursday ARES nets. We have decided to take this one step further and instead of doing our training on our net we will be provide Zoom training to replace our normal net on the third Thursday of the month. We feel that this will provide our trainees a better understanding of the presentations we plan in the future.
